Oh Snaps, on top of Snaps!

I thought creating a 2D character was amazing, then I thought 3D was another level, but seeing it animated is the Oh Snaps moment! The animation is not perfect but either way its pretty cool.
I am no rigger, thank God that there are companies that are dedicating their business to rigging. Thanks Yang, you are the man for keeping me up on game!

Ghosts' n Goblins

It feels like its been a long time since I posted new artwork, yeah I know its only been a week ha ha. Here is a new piece that I finished during this labor day weekend. I wanted to create a fun character with some edge. In my last post I created this knight and right away I thought I had to model this guy.
  • 2.5 hours to model
  • 2.5 hours to UV map it
  • 2 hours in photoshop

A great teacher once told me that our aesthetics comes from the things we loved as kids, it makes perfect sense and I think its true. Take Martin Scorsese as an example he loved gangster films as a kid,  Jhonny Knoxville loved Buster Keaton films. When I created this character I just thought to my self I want to make a interesting looking Knight. The more I got into it, I kept telling myself this Knight reminds me of someone Ive seen before.... (continued conversation at the bottom of this post)
And it hit me! My character reminds me of Ghosts' N Goblins Knight! I swear I didn't do this intentionally but look at it! Its pretty close. I freaking loved this game I couldn't get past the 4th level but still I loved that game! I can hear that song playing in my head now.

Follow that dream guys, following the dream is like being with a hot chick way out of your league. You spend all your time wondering how you got it, instead of saying that you got it.

Knight in Battle

Here is a new piece I just finished. Im a little upset about the time it took to get this done. This one took about 7 hours to do. It should have took 4 hours, the gravel and the cloud smoke took some time to make. Im happy with the result though...It might be a little too dark, I will adjust it once I have a fresh eye.  Im making a 3D model of this guy, I will post it soon! Salud!

I decided to revise this illustration. The top illustration is the latest version. I decided to break up the horizontal line, it just felt too harsh for me. I think that breaking the line really makes this illustration easier on the eye. Also I put more atmosphere in the background. I feel that the background would feel more natural if it wasn't so saturated. The last thing I did was add some noise to the illustration, its not really too noticeable but its the small things that makes a illustration pop.

Evil robot face

It's Friday and Im starting to wind down from a prolific week Ive had. I grab a beer and Im starring at the monitor, I humbly toast to myself and think outloud....My speed is getting pretty good, I think I can produce 2 of these a day. Salud!

War!!!!!!!!

I wanted to rework a old post, I just added a background to it. This took about 2 hours to do. All you need is some contrast a good composition and boom this happens.

backgrounds

I have been neglecting drawing environments, so I thought I would do something really stylized. Each one of these took less than 2 hours to do.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Here is a another fun one I just finished. I wanted to keep this one fun and cartoony, but my primary goal was to keep it in the 1,000 poly range. This model will have about 1,100 faces when its done. I still need the belt buckle and the hanging fabric from the belt and mask. This was colored using nothing but lambert fills, I will post a UV mapping version soon (of course with the weapons and the rest of the crew).  Salud...
This one took 5hours to do, it was one of those models where you really dont want to stop and you get kind of sad when its done. It happened so fast.

I think this model has immaculate flow, I think the only way to achieve this flow is by attaching the legs and arms after they have been modeled. I always get weird geometry when I model with the hands and legs attached to the body. I spent so much time moving the vertex it destroys my work flow.

Here is my vector drawing, I like to call it my blueprint. I can tell by the drawing alone that it was going to be fun to do. I didn't include a neck in the drawing but I think it just made more sense for it to have a neck in the 3D model.

Honestly I think that without this drawing I could have never reached the level of the 3D rendering. The reason being is that I figure out all stylized shapes and where I want them, that way when I start into the model Im just sculpting from memory instead of reinventing ideas.

Call me Runny for short

So I really liked the illustration I did the other day, I knew it was going to be real easy to build in Maya, and it was for the most part. When I started my only goal was to make it in the lowest poly-count possible. This image has 400 faces.

My regrets: I started with a 8x8 sphere, but I said to myself I think I can do it with a 6x6 sphere. I totally regret it, I wish his shape was boxier.
My likes:I like its simplicity.

Oh I got a great idea, im gong to post it without the smooth button, check it out below!! Crazy how it looks! Pretty ugly I know, but you can see how limited I was with this creation.

Warrior 3-D Model

Here goes more of our warrior friend, Ugh I do not want to UV map this one...but I will eventually get to it. I started thinking about my state of mind when it comes to UV mapping, I decided to start saying I love UV mapping. This way I will be happy when I start on it, keep you posted how that goes ha ha. Salud...

RunDMC inspired

I wanted to do something inspired by RunDMC, something just honoring classic hip-hop. I like how graphic the character is.
I did these in two hours! I put Jim Henson's Labyrinth on and just illustrated till it was finished. I should make a 3-D model out of this one, it should be real fun to do.

Warrior

Hers is a character im working on, its rough but I wanted to show the progress. I was told by a friend to stop posting unfinished models, but I said "F" that I love to see the evolution of things. I will post more when I finish it.

Spider-man

Here is a low polycount 3D model of Spiderman. This was so easy to build but a so freaking difficult for the UV textures to line up.

G_bodytype

So I'be been thinking how can I double, no triple my productivity. I started thinking If I create a generic body type and layout the UV's, I can just plug any character into this body type. In my mind I had Spider-Man's body type. He is slender but still somewhat muscular, I started going deep into the comic book universe and thinking about what other characters that have this body type are Abe Sapien (B.P.R.D. aka Hellboys friend), Nightwing , Carnage (he is actually skinnier) also If you think about it C-3PO. Also with this body type I can bulk it up a little and he could easily be Silver Surfer, Human Torch, and Deadpool. I will aim to do all said characters.

Ugh I hate posting my rough illustrator drawings but you do see my train of thought.  I think development is a valuable thing to show.
Here are some samples, the rule I used was that I could not alter the line drawing. Its crazy how far a character can come along by just putting some color.
Salud...

Cassius

In my mind I wanted to draw a ninja robot. Sort of like Shinobi meets Batman animated series.

I have been having my doubts about posting the vector drawing. The reason being they look so plain and boring but I thought it was important to show how a piece is created. I like to free hand a character then take it into illustrator to blueprint the entire figure. The flatness of a vector drawing really helps with 3-D modeling.

Dragon

Here is a new piece I havent finished yet. It needs eyes but Im really glad how its coming along. I wanted to show you how this all came to be. It started off with a illustration and then mapped out the profile using illustrator. From there I brought it to Maya. Hope you dig it, Salud...
